Siblings who have brothers or sisters with a disability
Guardian Weekend feature commission on a subject not often discussed - the experience of siblings who have a brother or sister with a disability. It is a subject that the majority of people give very little thought to. The relationship is a complex one, with non-disabled siblings often taking on an excessive amount of extra responsibility, with their own needs often going unseen. The magazine received a huge response, including a letter from a woman in her late 80s who said: ‘I never believed, in my lifetime, that my side of this story would be told’.
